Description
A rare and highly refined pair of Brazilian modern armchairs designed by Joaquim Tenreiro, dating to the 1950s. Conceived as part of Tenreiro’s exploration of lightness and structural clarity, this example features the far less common metal frame variant, making it significantly rarer than the more frequently encountered wooden versions.
The slender iron frames have been carefully repainted and refinished, preserving the original proportions and graphic elegance of the design. The seats and backrests have been newly upholstered in supple nubuck leather, offering a warm tactile contrast to the cool precision of the metal structure. The continuous upholstered backrest flows seamlessly into the armrests, creating an enveloping form that prioritizes comfort without compromising visual restraint.
These armchairs exemplify Tenreiro’s ability to balance European modernist rigor with a distinctly Brazilian sensibility—clean lines, reduced ornamentation, and an emphasis on proportion and usability. Their understated silhouette allows them to integrate effortlessly into both mid-century and contemporary interiors.
This model has been documented in contemporary publications, including Tenreiro’s own book, further underscoring its historical relevance and enduring design significance.
The chairs present in excellent vintage condition. The metal frames have been professionally restored, and the upholstery is new.
Set of 2 but can be sold individually -
