Description
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, ca. 1770-1790.
Red painted and decorated in the 19th c.
Excellent condition, wonderful painted surface, some wear.
The slightly smaller proportions of the chair may suggest it was a Lady’s chair. The carved shaped serpentine crest is highlighted with incising and scrolled ears above spindles, flanked by ring-turned bulbous posts. The beautifully formed shaped saddle seat is supported by vase and ring turned legs jointed by stretchers, ending turned tapered feet remaining in full height. An exceptional example in both form and condition.
Provenance: The Smith Collection, Pook and Pook, 2008. -
