    View from Cap Martin, Menton
    Signed (l.l.) C. E. DuBois
    43 ¾" x 67 ½" unframed

Charles Edouard DuBois was an early Impressionist. Born in West Hoboken, New Jersey DuBois would go on to paint in Paris, Stuttgart and eventually in Neuchatel, dying in Menton, France, along the French Riviera in 1885. He was a master of landscape painting, providing large dramatic views which were quieted with a peaceful poetic sense of majesty. His repertoire included most notably Palisades, Hudson River and Willows at West Hampton which were both exhibited at the Philadelphia Exposition. He was also presented at the Exhibition of Society of American Artists in 1878 with Evening at East Hampton.

View from Cap Martin captures the essence and strength of DuBois' plein air painting. The study for this important work was exhibited at the au Musee d'art et d'histoire de Neuchatel in 2004. Roquebrune-Cap-Martin was one of the most sought-after locations by both artists and the aristocracy of the Belle Epoque. A view also painted by Monet, this painting had been previously undiscovered and held in a private collection.
