Description
This is a wonderful pair of early 19th century Italian Neoclassical Barrel Back or Tub Bergeres. The form of the chairs is highly influeced by the French Directoire style, although a bit more refined. The fruitwood frames are designed to curve around and embrace the sitter. The front legs extend to the arms of the chair; the French
Directoire style would have featured a more pronounced front leg with a curled arm termination. The chairs are upholstered in a highend plaid that remains in very serviceable condition. (If desired, we will reupholstered the bergeres in the buyer's fabric at our cost.) Both chair are very stable and are in good refinished condition. Period Barrel Back chairs are increasingly difficult to acquired and this pair is a great "find"--they would be happy in many aesthetics --including mid-century. -
