Description
This style of chair was known as a smoker's bow chair, office chair, or Captain's chair. They were often found in offices, men's clubs and pubs due to their robust structure and were produced in many areas in England. This matching pair is constructed of elm and beech. The crest rail is crowned with a prominent arched and bowed back rest. Baluster turned spindles rise obliquely as a support for the striking horseshoe armrest. Each serpentine arm terminates in out-turned scrolled hand grips. This leads down to a deep, solid shaped birch seat supported by turned legs with vase-shaped feet, the legs supported by an H-form turned stretcher.
