Description
PAIR OF POLYCHROMED WROUGHT-IRON AND SADDLE-LEATHER SAVONAROLA CHAIRS
With cerule form, probably early 20th century
33 1/2" H x 18 3/8" D x 26" W; 19 1/4" H to seat
A very compelling form, this classical "Savonarola" chair is crafted entirely by hand using forged iron that shows every trace of the blacksmith's work throughout the surface. They are in a cerule form with hammered spade feet, the legs joined with a central pivot point at the center of each cyma-curvature, this joint decorated with a wonderful iron rosette on both the front and back. The seat and seat-back are slung with leather that is affixed with rawhide lacing, the seat-back decorated with two beautifully formed finials with ruby-red and part gilt highlights to the surface.
Condition: Distressed wrought-iron with loss to polychroming and part gilding throughout; incredibly strong and stable; leather is modern and in good condition with only minor wear.
