Description
Designed by Danish designer Peder Hansen, who immigrated to New Zealand in the 1960s, this safari chair in cognac leather and eucalyptus frame was produced by Taraire Crafts in Auckland, New Zealand 1967.
The chair has an elementary structure consisting of only two square frames. By showing the wooden finger joints, the steel connections and highlighting the seams the chair has a striking modernist / ‘constructivist’ style. The seat of thick cognac leather is attached to the frame with four straps. The seat has a corresponding loose leather cushion which shows a light patina. The backrest is mobile and will adjust to your back allowing for extra comfort. The armrests are padded and covered with the same thick leather.
After it's release the 304 'Safari Chair' competed for the first Rothman's Industrial Design Awards in 1968 and was one of the few furniture entries to tour New Zealand promoting good design to the masses. The chair was then sold in a small selection of high end design stores throughout the country. Same model is presented at the Museum of New Zealand.
This chair comes from the family of the designer.
