Description
The Arctander clam chair, also known as the “Muslingestol”, is easily recognizable by its rounded arms, club-shaped legs, and curved, slightly tilted backrest upholstered in the finest sheepskin material. The frame is made of stained beech. Both craftsmanship and quality are key in this design. Philip Arctander’s whimsical Clam Chair exudes coziness and comfort. It is a piece that would be a remarkable addition to any living space in need of an elegant touch.
Danish architect Arctander is mostly known for his directorship at the Danish Building institute and his UN advisory role for affordable housing. His contribution of the now-iconic Clam Chair to NY FORM in Copenhagen in 1944 got the piece immediately into production. With Arctander leaving the furniture branch, Nordic suppliers like IKEA and Vik & Blindheim adapted his drafts and only much later was confirmed that it was his design, making it somewhat more iconic inside the design market, where it holds a secured place today, beneath the Swedish classics Ekström, Holmquist or Malmsten.
These two iconic pieces would fit well in a Scandinavian-inspired or mid-century modern home. We have two of these chairs available, priced per piece. -
