Robert Lewis Rare Type Outdoor Chaise Santa Barbara CA. 1930s
-
Description
A rare keyhole backed outdoor lounge attributed to the studio of Robert Lewis (1880(?) - 1952)
Robert's shop at the Old de la Guerra Home in Santa Barbara opened in 1914 and was the go to venue for European Architectural elements, Philippine wicker, American Indian weavings and crafts i.e Maria black pottery purchased every year at Indian Market in Albuquerque, New Mexico and driven back in his truck to Santa Barbara, an amazing road trip.
The chaise may have originally been wrapped in rawhide a material favored by Robert Lewis to be compatible with the great number of Spanish Revival homes and mansions in which many of his wealthy Santa Barbaran clients lived.
The armrest framing could also have held raised redwood inserts and woven rawhide cup holders, I can't say for sure.
The thin tube furniture from the Robert Lewis Studio are the earliest furniture produced at his studio according to his son and from the catalogs that I was shown.
This is the only example of this design that i have seen.
The chaise is in very good condition and visually striking. -
