This exceptional matched pair of Mid-Century Modern table lamps was designed by Gerald Thurston for Lightolier during the 1950s. Characterized by Thurston’s signature balance of architectural form and strict functional engineering, each lamp features a striking central column composed of two slender, solid brass pillars flanking a floating mechanical core. Suspended directly between these pillars is an iconic, spring-loaded lucite cylinder baton capped with a solid brass tip, acting as the center pull-chain on/off switch—a brilliant hallmark of Thurston's mid-century tactile innovation.

The lamps are crowned with pristine enameled metal shades in an elegant off-white finish, maintaining strict geometric proportions. Engineered for optimal climate and light control, the design integrates specialized diffuser pans at both the top and bottom of the shade to seamlessly filter glare while managing bulb heat distribution. The sleek rectangular bases measure 10 x 21 cm, rising to a base diameter of 10 cm and an efficient height-to-socket of 39 cm. Founded in New York in 1904, Lightolier spent the post-WWII building boom aggressively boosting its residential division by embracing cutting-edge technical and aesthetic innovations. To spearhead this movement, the company enticed acclaimed industrial designer Gerald Thurston to join them in 1950.

Thurston heavily influenced American modernism by drawing inspiration from contemporary Scandinavian lighting and the utilitarian, multi-level directional work of Gino Sarfatti’s Italian firm, Arteluce. That very same year, Thurston’s progressive vision earned him a spot in the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) prestigious Good Design Exhibition. His decades-long partnership with Lightolier resulted in some of the era's most collectible lighting fixtures.
