Description
A stunning pair of the Iconic Runar Engblom arm chairs that were designed for the Vaakuna Hotel next to the central railway station in Helsinki. The same hotel that houses some of the best pieces by Paavo Tynell.
The chairs have a distinct curvaceous line all around and are extremely comfortable to sit in. The chairs are upholstered with moccha / chocolate brown natural sheepskin
Please note that these chairs are of the first ones made for the hotel that had a light structure and not of the later wooden framed ones that were made to replace some old broken ones. An extremely rare original pair from the hotel.
Helge Runar Engblom (1908-1965) was a prominent Finnish Designer and interior designer, perhaps best known for his work on the iconic Vaakuna Hotel in central Helsinki. Engblom studied furniture design between 1925-1929 in the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. In 1936 Engblom rented an atelje together with another well known Finnish author and artist Tove Jansson, and some other classmates. From there in the 1930s he began working as a freelance designer. He designed furniture and interiors for many public buildings in Helsinki, such as the Vaakuna Hotel, Helsinki central post office and the University of Helsinki. -
