Description
Impressive set of six oak brutalist chairs, Spain, circa 1970. This set features six exquisitely sculptural and geometrical brutalist chairs. The marks of Brutalism can be observed in the unornamented, solid wood, exposed joints, and raw oaken surfaces. The design of these chairs project an air of strength and solidity. The slightly curved backrest and seat of these chairs provide comfort, while the sturdy frame and legs guarantee a solid base. This set is comprised of truly expressive, attention-grabbing pieces. The triangular backside of the chairs evokes the architectural roots of Brutalism, while the solid oak and overall organic material keeps the set from feeling industrial. It is at its core, frank craftsmanship.
Brutalist design extends the functional logic of Modernism, privileging bold and rugged forms and leaving all details undisguised. The rougher, earthly coloured wood and other materials that are used in brutalist design are the visual and palpable antithesis of the sleek, smooth and suave. Brutalist design encompasses that which is crafted, hewn and worked by hand. Brutalist furniture emerge through statement pieces that can blend into a variety of design styles.
Today, Brutalism is seen as a reaction against artificiality and lightness, reevoking the appreciation for raw, yet vigilant design. The brutalist pieces, exemplified by this beautiful set of chairs, lend a unique, eccentric to any interior or collection.
