Description
18171C: Set of Four English Victorian Louis XV-Style Giltwood Chairs
English, c. 1840
Height 96cm, width 55cm, depth 46cm
This elegant set of four giltwood side chairs is a fine example of English Rococo Revival seat furniture, dating to the mid-19th century. Beautifully proportioned and richly carved, the chairs reflect the refined craftsmanship and decorative sophistication that distinguished the best English cabinet-making workshops of the Victorian period.
Each chair has a shaped cartouche-form back beneath a finely carved crest rail, centred by an exuberant rocaille cartouche and framed by scrolling acanthus and shell ornament. The serpentine seat rail is centred by a boldly carved shell above cabriole legs headed by acanthus and terminating in scrolled feet. Crisp, hand-cut carving extends throughout each giltwood frame, with the four chairs conceived en suite, matching in frames and ornament. The seats and backs are upholstered in burgundy silk damask with decorative nailhead trim, providing a rich contrast to the warm tone of the giltwood.
Inspired by the furniture of Louis XV of France, the Rococo Revival became one of the defining decorative idioms of the Victorian period. English cabinet makers reimagined the fluid curves and naturalistic ornament of 18th-century French design for the grand reception and dining rooms of Britain's country houses and fashionable town residences, producing furniture that married Continental elegance with exceptional standards of craftsmanship.
Graceful in proportion, richly carved and preserved as a matching set, these chairs are equally suited to a distinguished period interior or a carefully curated contemporary setting, where their sculptural quality and refined decoration can be fully appreciated.
