Set of Six Gustavian Chairs by Jacob Malmsten, Stockholm, circa 1780

$ 12,950
  • Description
    An exceptional set of six Swedish Gustavian chairs attributed to Jacob Malmsten of Stockholm, dating to the late eighteenth century, circa 1780–1788. Malmsten was a master cabinetmaker active during the height of the Gustavian period, known for refined proportions and disciplined neoclassical design influenced by French Louis XVI models.

    Each chair features a rectilinear back with finely carved detail and restrained ornamentation, reflecting the clarity and balance characteristic of Swedish neoclassicism. The frames retain a light painted surface with soft wear consistent with age, contributing to an authentic and highly desirable patina. The seats are upholstered, providing comfort while maintaining the architectural purity of the design.

    The chairs are well matched as a set and remain structurally sound. Their elegant scale and historical importance make them suitable for a formal dining room or collector’s interior. Rare in both quality and provenance, this set represents a significant example of late eighteenth-century Swedish furniture craftsmanship from a documented Stockholm maker.

    This is an antique and having been around for a long time, it will show signs of wear. Antique pieces have very much sought-after character and associated flaws. Please review photos for condition & contact us with questions!
