Description
With a robust organic form and an earth-toned palette, this chair is the embodiment of Brutalism. In furniture and décor, the Brutalist movement was somber, giving importance to eerie organic and rugged shapes in organic, earthy tones.
The defining characteristics of Brutalist furniture design can be observed in this chair: hard edges, unornamented, solid wood structure, exposed joints, and raw wooden surfaces. The sole form of ornamentation is the hole found on the top of the back of the chair. It prevents the back from looking heavy, creating an airy look for the design. The high back and seat provide plenty of surface to expose the beauty of the wood. Wood from oak trees is durable and long-lasting wood with a rich colour and texture, which is why it remains beloved and therefore, timeless. In this chair, the pattern and grain of the wood is striking, showing the traces of history in every line and mark. Sensitive touches enliven the brutalist design, visible in the careful craftsmanship. The quality of woodworking is evident, with handcrafted edges and impeccable joinery that masterfully utilizes nothing but the wood itself. The robust legs are splayed gently to assure stability with carved edges. Through its eccentric geometries and expressive forms, - brutalist furniture design’s best qualities - this chair is perfect for any interior to add some organic charm.
Wood has never gone out of style, and pieces with an emphasis on a natural look are only gaining popularity today. This oak chair is equally striking standing alone, or as parts of an interior with a medley of styles. In the 21st century brutalist furniture design has been making a comeback, making 20th century pieces like this one rare and valuable pieces of the movement.
