Pair of Crystal Glass and Brass Ceiling Lamps by Carl Fagerlund, Sweden ca 1950s

Carl Fagerlund (1915–2011) was one of Sweden's most influential lighting designers and served as chief designer for Orrefors from 1946 to 1980. He became renowned for his ability to combine sculptural glass with functional lighting, producing fixtures for both residential and public interiors. His work played an important role in post-war Scandinavian lighting design, many of his lighting models remain among the most recognisable examples of the era.

This pair of ceiling lamps showcases the qualities that define Fagerlund's work. Each fixture consists of a brass ceiling element supporting a thick circular crystal shade composed of finely moulded ribs around the perimeter of the glass. The deeply faceted quality of the lamps allows them to refract and scatter the light, creating a sparkling effect while diffusing the glow evenly across the room. The concentric arrangement of the crystal gives the lamps remarkable visual depth, with the geometry becoming even more pronounced once illuminated. The restrained brass mount provides a break in the glass surface, while allowing the craftsmanship of the crystal itself to remain the focal point. Although compact in height, the striking construction and clarity of the glass give the fixtures a strong architectural presence, making them equally effective as functional ceiling lights and decorative sculptural elements.

Fagerlund is best known for the work he did at Orrefors Glassworks, where this pair of lamps was manufactured. Orrefors was one of the leading companies in the Scandinavian Modern movement, and is revered by collectors for the fine craftsmanship and innovation of its superlative art glass.

Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The lamps have recently been rewired and reconditioned. Due to the nature and age of the glass and brass, the items may have marks, scratches, and discolouration. These lamps are compatible with an E26 / E27 (standard) fitting. All lighting can be converted for US usage.
