Description
This pleasantly elegant sofa is from the “Chile” series by Swedish designer, Svante Skogh. His seating designs are exceedingly rare - especially the “Chile” series - making this sofa all the more special from a design history perspective as well.
Like many of his Scandinavian modern counterparts, Skogh designed furniture that utilized richly grained wood mixed with soft, supple fabrics. This is clearly visible in this sofa, with a design that dates to the early 1950s and has its roots in the Swedish Modern movement of the 1930s and 40s. Accordingly, the design is gentle and welcoming, and crafted with timeless, quality materials. The open body is the focal point, enhanced by the elegant upholstery. The arms blend into the back with edges that slightly curve outwards, opening up the design visually. The inviting body is supported by an expertly crafted wooden frame, with tapered wooden legs that are splayed for structural purposes.
The elegant curviness of this sofa strikes an aesthetic balance that is the result of the gently rounded back and arms, combined with the soft, premium upholstery. There is something more inviting about curved or rounded shapes, which is true for the legs as well. The splayed, dark-stained wood legs further add to the modern, organic feel, balancing out the voluptuous profile of the sofa. In combination with the unadorned styles of mid-century design, this sofa brings together the best attributes of the era, and is a true testament to the craftsmanship of Svante Skogh.
The manufacturer Kling Möbler has a history of over 80 years. Einar Kling started his business in 1938, manufacturing furniture in Alingsås that was sold all over Sweden. Interestingly, the founder trained hundreds of Alingsåsers to become upholsterers and seamstresses in his factories in Holmalund and Kristineholm.
