Description
PAIR OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN "SAFARI" CHAIRS ATTRIBUTED TO WILHELM KIENZLE
Lacquered beechwood, brand new artisan-made saddle leather | circa 1970s | unmarked | a matched pair
ref. 301WJU28X
32 3/8" H x 24" D x 23 1/8" W x 14 1/4" H to seat This exquisite pair of chairs, crafted in the "Safari" style, exemplify the Scandinavian design principles with a blend of functionality and aesthetics. Designed to be fully disassembled for easy transport, the chairs are generally attributed to the designer Wilhelm Kienzle, though we have not found the chair represented in any catalogs that firmly document the designer.
Constructed entirely of solid beechwood, the four posts raise the strap leather arm supports while carriage bolts through the stiles allow the back to comfortably swing and adjust exactly to your back. Despite the thick saddle-leather, we personally find them to be insanely comfortable!
The chair's leather upholstery is beautifully done by a local leather artisan, perfectly replicating the form of what was originally canvas (stained and unusable) in a luxurious long-living heavy saddle leather. It is one of those materials that allow history to be written on its surface attractively, gaining patina and story over the years while still remaining serviceable for decades.
Our gallery has a large stock of numerous examples of "Safari" chairs, some in original leather, many refreshed with brand new leather. View our stock for other examples.
** Note, unless other arrangements are made prior to purchasing, the chairs will be shipped entirely disassembled to keep shipping costs down. It will be the buyer's responsibility to reassemble the chairs upon receipt. The chairs can be shipped assembled upon request, though it will go a different mode of transport and the cost will be higher.** Condition Report:
Vintage and likely original surface with stains, blemish and wear throughout the wooden frame. Brand new artisan-made leather covering. Replaced carriage bolts with solid brass bolts. Exceedingly good presentation. Sturdy, strong and very comfortable. -
