Description
This pair of chairs might seem bold and rugged at first glance, however, at closer inspection, it is clear that the design is very well-thought-out; the lines are precisely sculpted, and the joinery precise and tight.
These so-called “Spanish chairs” are a masterly interpretation of a traditional type of chair often found in areas influenced by ancient Islamic culture from Andalusia to northern India. Here, the designer modernized the traditional shape, eliminating the elaborate carvings while retaining the important features: the broad seats and backrests that give the chair character and provide ample support for the human body. Furthermore, the combination of the wood and saddle leather gives a strong, rustic appearance. The design marries warm, the tanned leather with pronounced stitching and joinery. And yet, the visual element that defines the chairs are the metal screw caps that fix the leather to the frame. The original saddle leather forms the seat and back, showing its sturdiness and timelessness. The cognac colour matches the wood beautifully and together with the screw caps, the rustic look is greatly enhanced by these features. Adding to the characteristic details are the wooden stretchers around the legs, with a wide and unique shape in the front.
It is evident that the maker of these chairs possessed great talent in cabinetmaking, and used high-quality materials that became even more appealing with the decades gone by. This is visible in the beautiful patina of the leather and the wood.
