Set of Four White Alvar Aalto Minimalistic Shelves 112B in Birch, Artek 1960s

$ 4,520
  • Description
    A set of four of the iconic model 112B shelves by Alvar Aalto for Artek. The design is as minimal as it gets, consisting of a single shelf supported by the two recognisable triangular wall brackets that have become a signature of Aalto’s work.

    Each shelf remains in its original white finish and all pieces originate from the same household. There were eight in total, with the remaining four offered in a separate listing. These examples date to the 1960s or possibly the early 1970s, identifiable by their straight screws. Measurements are given per one piece.

    The condition is good overall, with wear consistent with age and use. There is some colour cracking and minor chipping, which contributes to a pleasing patina and enhances the character of the shelves.
    For shipping, the shelves will be dismantled to ensure a safer and more affordable delivery.

    Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is regarded as one of the most important figures in modern architecture and design. His work spans architecture, furniture, textiles, glass, sculpture and painting, though he saw these disciplines as extensions of architecture rather than separate art forms. His career evolved from Nordic Classicism in the 1920s to Modernism and later into a more organic approach from the 1940s onward.

    Together with his wife Aino Aalto, he developed holistic design concepts, creating not only buildings but also their interiors, including furniture, lighting and glassware. His furniture designs represent Scandinavian Modernism at its finest, particularly through his pioneering use of bent plywood, which had a lasting influence on Mid-Century Modern design.
    Today, Aalto’s works are highly sought after by collectors and institutions alike, regularly appearing in important private collections and major museums around the world.
