Description
Dresser with Four Drawers and Mirror, Oak Structure, Maple Inlay Drawers, Italian Manufacture, 1940s
The geometric lines of this walnut chest of drawers reflect the Italian style of the 1940s. Situated between Rationalism and Art Deco, the presented piece appears directly inspired by the architecture of the period. The oak base, characterized by horizontal "grissinato" fluting, supports a simple, well-proportioned parallelepiped. The aesthetic appeal of this piece lies in the alternating use of differently colored woods. This subtle variety of textures and hues echoes the facades of buildings from the era, where travertine, smooth cement, and traditional string courses dominated. In this piece, the only concession to classical decorative elements is the drawer fronts, which feature a grid of perpendicular lines inlaid with maple, enhancing the geometric forms of the furniture.
The original handles, made of durable plastic and polished brass, are also noteworthy. They are large, intricately designed, and represent stylized flowers, adding precious details that complete the furniture's design.
A rectangular mirror with an oak wood frame, featuring the original reflective glass of the period, can be paired with the dresser to enhance its functionality. With four large, spacious drawers, this piece is ideal for furnishing a bedroom or serving as an entryway console.
A professional restoration has brought the dresser back to its original polished condition.
