French 19th Century Mahogany Empire Enfilade
-
Description
Dimensions: 41 ½” H x 81 ½” W x 22” D
A tremendous 19th century French enfilade of classic Empire styling, made of richly figured bookmatched mahogany adorned with gilt bronze accents. The original marble top of dark stone is speckled with tiny fossils underneath the expected scratches from time and use. In the overhanging frieze below, a row of three drawers (free of hardware) are decorated with gilt bronze appliqués featuring a pair of resplendent swans. Three storage compartments in the case are enclosed by a pair of double doors at center and two smaller doors on the sides wrapped in bookmatched veneer of abstract, swirling grain patterns that invite comparison to a Rorschach test. Four, thick columns across the front–detached from the case–are mounted with gilt bronze capitals and bases that further underscore the Empire period appreciation for Greco-Roman architecture and decorative arts. When open, the doors expose fixed shelves (14 ¾” deep) with abundant space for storage in a dining room or foyer. Keyholes for the working locks are covered in elongated anthemion escutcheons with one key included. Cleaned, tightened, refinished, and polished with a French paste wax this showstopping storage piece is ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more. -
