Description
Designed by legendary American modernist George Nelson for Herman Miller, this authentic four-drawer dresser from the celebrated Basic Cabinet Series embodies the clean, architectural approach that helped define American Mid-Century Modern design.
Expertly restored by Hobbs Moderns Team, this cabinet showcases Nelson’s commitment to simplicity, proportion, and material quality. The case is crafted in beautifully grained walnut, highlighted by an exceptional detail often overlooked by casual collectors: the drawer fronts are executed in rift-sawn walnut, a more expensive and selective cut of lumber prized for its straight, consistent grain pattern. Unlike the dramatic cathedral grain commonly associated with walnut, rift-sawn walnut offers a refined, understated appearance that Nelson intentionally favored for a cleaner, more modern aesthetic.
The dresser features four spacious drawers fitted with its original sculptural aluminum pulls, creating a subtle contrast against the warm walnut tones. The drawers themselves are constructed in oak with quality dovetail joinery, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship Herman Miller furniture was known for during the mid-century period.
Supporting the cabinet are striking black lacquered legs, which provide a visual lightness while reinforcing the architectural geometry of the design. The result is a piece that feels equally at home in a modern bedroom, office, living room, or entryway.
This example no longer retains its original Herman Miller label. However, after handling and authenticating numerous examples of the Basic Cabinet Series over the years, we can confidently guarantee its authenticity. The dresser will be accompanied by Hobbs Modern authenticity papers for the next owner’s records and peace of mind.
The walnut has been professionally refinished in our workshop, bringing out the depth, warmth, and natural beauty of the wood while preserving the integrity and character of the original design. The finish highlights the subtle elegance of the rift-sawn drawer fronts and the rich walnut grain throughout the case.
More than seventy years after its introduction, George Nelson's Basic Cabinet Series remains one of the most sophisticated storage collections produced by Herman Miller—an enduring example of functional modernism that continues to influence furniture design today.
