Description
Few pieces embody the optimism and innovation of American Mid-Century Modern design more completely than George Nelson’s Thin Edge Case Series for Herman Miller. Introduced during the 1950s under Nelson’s direction as Herman Miller’s Design Director, the collection redefined what storage furniture could be—light, architectural, and remarkably refined.
This exceptional 10-drawer Thin Edge dresser is one of the most sought-after case pieces from the series. Crafted in beautifully figured walnut, its long horizontal form appears almost weightless thanks to Nelson’s signature thin-edged case construction and elegantly tapered solid walnut legs. Every proportion was carefully considered to create furniture that felt less like cabinetry and more like architecture.
The ten spacious drawers are fitted with Nelson’s iconic sculptural early Bakelite “Apple Core” drawer pulls, one of the defining details of the collection. Unlike conventional hardware, these pulls become part of the overall composition, emphasizing clean lines while providing effortless function. The drawer fronts are crafted from rift-sawn walnut, a premium cut of wood selected for its remarkably straight, consistent grain. Nelson intentionally specified rift walnut to achieve the restrained, modern appearance that became synonymous with Herman Miller’s finest case furniture.
Inside, the dresser offers abundant storage while maintaining the elegant simplicity that has made the Thin Edge Series one of the most enduring collections in American furniture history. Whether used in a primary bedroom, dressing room, or as a statement credenza, this piece delivers both exceptional utility and timeless design.
At Hobbs Modern, we’ve restored hundreds of George Nelson pieces and consider the Thin Edge Series among the finest furniture Herman Miller ever produced. This dresser has been meticulously restored in our San Diego workshop using museum-quality techniques that preserve the integrity of the original craftsmanship while highlighting the warmth and depth of its walnut veneer. Every drawer has been adjusted for smooth operation, the finish has been carefully renewed, and the piece is ready for another generation of daily use.
Authentic George Nelson case pieces have become increasingly difficult to acquire, particularly complete examples in walnut. As collectors continue to recognize Nelson’s profound influence on modern design, the finest Thin Edge dressers have become cornerstones of important Mid-Century Modern collections.
