Description
Dimensions: 35 ⅜” H x 46 ¼” W x 23 ¼” D
An extraordinary Italian walnut commode from the 19th century, Neoclassical in style, decorated with a graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that creates movement and definition over the exterior. The surface uses two, beautiful planks shaped to chamfered corners and outlined around the edges with a sawtooth pattern of inlay in contrasting light/dark tones. A case of five drawers includes two small drawers in the top row over three wider drawers all inlaid with a geometric design of elongated checkerboard strips of alternating blonde and dark woods. Each drawer opens by ring pull hardware; note the escutcheons are only decorative without an original key present. Chamfered front corners are inlaid with a very narrow triangle rising from the feet to end in a little diamond perhaps suggesting a candle or symbolizing an eternal flame. The side panels have inlaid designs complementary to those on the drawer fronts so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this commode is ready to be enjoyed in your interior. Be sure to view the detailed images to see the current condition. -
