Italian 19th Century Two-drawer Inlay Commode

This Italian chest of drawers from the 19th century, in its wide, rectilinear proportions becomes a showcase for the walnut construction with thin bands of marquetry to complement the movement in the grain. The top surface is arranged as parallel strips in the center panel enclosed by a line of inlay like a twisted rope, framed by a border around the four sides. The sides of the case and drawers feature bookmatched, chevron fronts leading the eye upward, repeating the same rope twist line and opening by oval brass ring pulls. Two spacious drawers easily glide to reveal a clean interior, lined in charming vintage green and red daisy-patterned paper. Square, tapering legs elevate the case from the floor. Departing from the standard three row commodes in the French tradition, this example has a modern sophistication that will appeal to collectors of 20th century design as well.
