Description
A striking and sculptural example of mid-century California design, this rare six-drawer dresser by John Keal for Brown Saltman showcases the warmth, grain, and refinement of Honduran mahogany. Keal’s work is celebrated for its architectural restraint paired with playful design details — and this piece is no exception.
The dresser’s clean, rectilinear case floats lightly above its sculpted mahogany base, giving the cabinet a sense of lift and elegance. Across the drawer fronts runs one of the most distinctive details of the design: a set of unusual, zig-zag cast brass pulls. These pulls create a rhythmic visual line across the dresser, adding texture, movement, and a subtle touch of whimsy to the otherwise minimalist form. They read as jewelry against the warm mahogany — a signature Keal detail that collectors instantly recognize.
The drawers offer generous storage while maintaining the sleek profile and balanced proportions Brown Saltman is known for. Warm honey-amber tones in the wood highlight the natural beauty of the Honduran mahogany, with beautiful ribbon-grain patterns that glow under light.
This is a wonderful example of Brown Saltman’s refined craftsmanship during the golden era of West Coast modernism — at once functional, sculptural, and deeply tactile.
