Large Vernacular Folk Art Chest, Italy, 19th Century

$ 7,200
  • Description
    Large vernacular folk art chest from the 19th century, originating from Pra Fouchier, a village in Bellino in the upper Valle Varaita, Piedmont, Italy. Constructed from substantial solid wood boards around a robust framework, the chest has an elongated form reinforced by heavy vertical supports. The hinged upper section opens to a divided interior, while hand-forged iron fittings, including the distinctive strap and ring closure, underline its functional origins. The irregular boards, exposed construction and deeply weathered surface preserve the marks of prolonged use and give the piece a particularly strong vernacular character.

    Its provenance in the Alpine Valle Varaita places the chest within a tradition of locally made utilitarian furniture, where construction was determined by available materials, practical requirements and established regional craftsmanship rather than formal design. The resulting simplicity and directness are integral to the character of the piece, with its substantial proportions, visible joinery and aged surface documenting generations of use. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
