"Norman" Sideboard in Walnut by Luciano Frigerio, Italy 1970s
-
Description
This sideboard from the “Norman” series, crafted in Italy during the 1970s, is a fine example of Frigerio’s design philosophy, where musical influence, artistic flair, and master craftsmanship converge.
Design
Made from richly figured African walnut, the piece presents a rhythmic facade of deeply carved vertical slats. The geometric relief work is not merely decorative, it gestures toward a musical staff, an abstract composition reminiscent of piano keys, echoing Frigerio’s own background as a trained pianist. Each element is cut and assembled to form a flowing, tactile surface that invites touch and visual study.
The surface is veneered on all sides, including the interior, demonstrating the same attention to detail throughout. Subtle magnetised closures allow the doors to open effortlessly and close silently. Inside, the central cabinet reveals four drawers, each fitted with small, patinated brass knobs, while the flanking compartments are sectioned with internal shelves for practical storage. The use of solid brass and the continuous walnut grain across the drawers and doors confirms the careful construction and design intent.
The sideboard is clearly marked 'Frigerio'
Condition
The condition is very good with minor signs of use appropriate to age. The wood has retained its warm patina, and all components function as intended. -
