Description
A pair of French gilt bronze mounted red lacquer chinoiserie cabinets, attributed to Maison Jansen, Paris, circa 1925. Each cabinet is surmounted by a shaped rouge breccia marble top above a pair of doors inset with bronze-framed red lacquer panels, finely decorated in raised gilt with pagodas and pavilions, figures at leisure, cranes in flight, flowering branches, and pierced rockwork within stylized lake landscapes; the canted sides fitted with conforming panels, so that the decoration continues around the whole. The kingwood-veneered cases are mounted throughout in finely cast and chased gilt bronze — pierced foliate scroll chutes to the canted angles, a shell-and-scroll mount to the shaped apron, and conforming sabots — the whole raised on short splayed bracket feet and bound with bronze mouldings above and below. The exceptional quality of the bronze work, crisply cast and hand-chased, together with the sophistication of the lacquer panels, is characteristic of the finest Paris decorating houses of the period.
