Pair of Directoire Chests in Plum Wood with Original Gray Marble Tops, 18th Cent
-
Description
This exceptional pair of Italian Directoire chests, dating to the late 18th century, is a rare find both for their material and provenance. Crafted from beautifully figured plum wood, an uncommon and highly prized hardwood, these chests offer a deep, warm tone with distinctive grain patterns that set them apart from more common walnut or mahogany counterparts. The form is classic Directoire: clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and gently tapering legs that speak to the neoclassical transition away from baroque excess. Each chest features three drawers adorned with original brass hardware and escutcheons, providing functional storage with refined elegance.
The gray marble tops are original to the pieces and boast a softly veined surface with natural movement, each slab carefully preserved and polished in our workshop. Sourced from a noble family estate in Parma, the marble adds both historical value and timeless sophistication. This pair has been meticulously restored, respecting the integrity of the materials and the original joinery. Elegant, rare, and fully functional, these chests are ideal for collectors or interior designers seeking meaningful, museum-quality furniture with authentic Italian heritage. -
