Description
An Italian carved walnut sideboard, circa 1948, in the manner of Paolo Buffa. The rectangular case with four doors, the central pair veneered in richly figured burl walnut and centered by carved oval medallions depicting galleons under full sail on a swelling sea, the details heightened in gilt; the flanking doors laid with geometric diamond parquetry in contrasting walnut and inset with square panels carved with stylized shells and scrolling waves, similarly gilt. Fitted with decorative brass strapwork hinges and escutcheons and a carved and gilded central pull. The interior fully mirrored and fitted with plate glass shelves. Raised on massive turned bun feet.
The maritime relief decoration relates closely to the documented late-1940s sideboards produced by Vittorio Dassi to designs by Paolo Buffa.
Of particularly useful proportion — generous in height and length at 72.5 inches wide by 41 inches high, yet only 18 inches deep — the piece offers considerable presence and storage while projecting far less than a conventional credenza, making it well suited to an entrance hall, a dining room, or any wall where depth is at a premium. -
