Exceptional Large Signed Paul Evans 1969 Directional Sclupted Bronze Wall Unit

Designed by Paul Evans in the 1960s for the prestigious manufacturer Directional, this incredible piece is very likely one of a kind. While others exist, none have as many bays (4) or are as tall. At 96 inches tall, this rare unit dwarfs all others available, and with four columns attached to the wall, this piece is an exceptional example of a stellar and much-loved design. All 12 smoked glass shelves are original (one not pictured at top of center bay). One column is signed PE 69, thus very early production in the Sculpted Bronze line and Evans' career.

This piece, along with others from the Sculpted Bronze line, was created from a combination of epoxy resin and composite applied to a plywood base and sculpted into the various swirls, drips and other designs that make Evans' work so distinctive. Once cured and hardened, each column was sandblasted and sprayed with an atomized bronze finish, varnished, blown with a torch to provide an aged bronze look, polished, and then varnished again to seal in the finish and protect against oxidation. The final product is a sealed bronze with a low-luster sheen but weighs very little compared to solid bronze construction. A rare and iconic Paul Evans design.

Provenance: I purchased this set from the original owners' home in Long Island, NY. From this home, I also purchased an Evans Stalagmite dining table (already sold). A set of 8 dining chairs (not currently available). And a pair of benches (not currently available).

Condition: Very good vintage condition. No oxidation. No finish loss. Minor scuffs and scratches to likely original glass. One replaced glass shelf. Note each column has an internal cleat designed for mounting directly to walls. Easy installation. Happy to provide further details.
