Rare Paul T. Frankl Art Deco Lacquered and Silvered Skyscraper Sideboard c. 1928

An exceptionally rare and important Art Deco sideboard designed by Paul T. Frankl and produced in his New York workshop, circa 1920s–1930s. The cabinet was retailed through Frankl's celebrated Frankl Galleries on East 48th Street in New York and represents an early and remarkably sophisticated expression of American Modernism.
The architectural composition features two tall storage cabinets flanking an open central display area fitted with three original glass shelves. Finished in a striking two-tone yellow ochre lacquer, the sideboard is richly detailed with silver-leaf ornamentation, silver-plated trim and beautifully faceted solid brass hardware with a silvered finish. Each side cabinet retains its distinctive ring pull, bullet hinges and adjustable interior shelving, while the cabinet tops retain their original inset mirrored glass.
The combination of lacquer, mirror, glass and silvered metal gives the piece an extraordinary presence. Frankl balances the strong geometric massing of the two towers with the transparency of the central glass shelving, creating a design that feels simultaneously architectural and remarkably light.
Of particular significance, the design is documented in a period publication illustrating a nearly identical sideboard in a contemporary dining room and captioned "Designed by P. T. Frankl." The cabinet also retains its original Frankl Galleries / Skyscraper Furniture metal label from the firm's East 48th Street New York gallery.
Preserved in remarkably original condition, including its lacquered surfaces, mirrored tops, glass shelves and decorative metalwork. The surviving original finishes display the character and patina expected of an important early example.
