Pier Luigi Colli Oak wood sideboard with carved walnut inlays, Italy, 1940s

  • Description
This sideboard commands the room through its pronounced character. The long, rectangular body is raised on a pair of broad, fluted supports connected by a single stretcher bar, lending the piece a structural frankness that recalls both Alpine carpentry traditions and the architectural discipline of the Art Déco. The proportions are emphatic yet balanced: the mass of the cabinet reads as a single, resolved volume, its weight tempered by the elevation from the floor and the rhythmic articulation of its facade.

The structure is entirely in oak, finished to a warm, golden tone that reveals the pronounced grain of the wood across every surface. The top is veneered in a concentric diamond pattern of considerable precision. The front is organised as a grid of square panels arranged in two rows, alternating between plain fields with diamond-shaped grain patterns and smaller inset panels carved in relief from what appears to be walnut. These carvings depict naturalistic subjects — deer, fish, birds, leaves, woodland creatures — each rendered with a fluid, stylised confidence that speaks of accomplished hand-carving. The legs are channelled with deep vertical fluting, joined by a horizontal stretcher that passes through each support and is secured with a visible through-tenon, a deliberate expression of honest joinery. Original brass keys are retained.

The sideboard is the work of Pier Luigi Colli, heir to the long-established Colli workshop in Turin, active since the mid-nineteenth century. The formal vocabulary — the interplay between rationalist geometry and naturalistic carved ornament, the evocation of Alpine craft within a decidedly urban and architectonic framework — is characteristic of Colli's eclecticism during the 1940s. Shaped by his encounter with the Paris 1925 Exposition and by productive relationships with leading Italian architects including Gio Ponti and Carlo Mollino, Colli developed a language that moved freely between decorative tradition and modern rigour. This sideboard is a particularly resolved expression of that sensibility.

The piece is in very good condition, having been professionally restored and refinished by our internal atelier. The oak surfaces are even and well preserved, with minor signs of age consistent with the period. The carved panels are intact; all doors function correctly with original locks and keys.
