Rustic Art Populaire Wooden Cabinet, France, 19th Century

$ 4,350
  • Description
    This rustic wooden cabinet was made in France during the 19th century and belongs to the tradition of Art Populaire, reflecting the practical character of French vernacular furniture. Its large door incorporates a rectangular metal mesh panel that provided ventilation while keeping the contents protected. Together with the three internal shelves, this construction suggests that the cabinet was most likely used for storing food or provisions before modern refrigeration.

    The simple construction, iron hardware and shaped feet are complemented by irregular surfaces, variations in the timber and traces of historical use, resulting in a richly aged patina. These characteristics preserve the cabinet’s distinctly rural and utilitarian character. As with all our rustic furniture, this piece has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
