Description
Gilt bronze and amethyst Louis XVI style circular side table
French, late 19th Century
Height 73cm, diameter 52cm
This exceptional circular side table is a superb example of nineteenth-century French Neoclassicism, drawing as it does on the work on the famed eighteenth-century furniture maker Adam Weisweiler. The table features a circular amethyst top, which is set into a blue enamel frame finished with gilt bronze intertwining foliate friezes. The top is raised on three gilt bronze legs: each leg is modelled as a caryatid with a laden basket of fruit on its head, above of a moulded foliate stem. The legs are joined by an ornate curvy stretcher centred with an urn-form finial, and each leg terminates in a fluted toupie foot.
