Description
This Mid-Century Modern side table was designed by Adrian Pearsall and manufactured by Craft Associates in the United States circa 1960s. The piece features a solid American black walnut interlocking base supporting a heavy, thick-cut slab of natural river slate.
The architectural frame showcases Pearsall’s signature geometric lines, relying on substantial walnut legs configured in a clean, three-piece interlocking assembly. The solid walnut structural support incorporates a pegged dowel joinery construction method, where linear components intersect at right angles and are secured by internal wooden pins. This structural framework keeps the heavy slate top securely suspended, showcasing an intentional contrast between the warm, smooth grain patterns of the walnut and the dense, textured surface of the natural black stone.
The History of Craft Associates & Adrian Pearsall
Famed designer and architect Adrian Pearsall (1925–2011) founded Craft Associates, Inc. in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1952 alongside his wife, Dorie, and brother, Richard. With an educational background in architectural engineering from the University of Illinois, Pearsall integrated structural, avant-garde geometry with residential furniture manufacturing. This structural sensibility helped define the expressive "Atomic Age" aesthetic of post-war American Modernism.
During the late 1950s and 1960s, Craft Associates became highly successful due to Pearsall’s signature solid walnut lines. His work popularized low-slung, sweeping gondola sofas, dramatic cantilevered frames, and sculptural glass or slate-topped tables. Unlike contemporary designers who licensed their work to separate manufacturing plants, Pearsall retained direct control of Craft Associates' operations. This oversight ensured high-quality joinery, properly dried hardwoods, and long-lasting frames. The company grew to over 800 employees before being sold to Lane Furniture in 1968. Original 1960s Craft Associates pieces remain sought-after by modernist collectors due to their distinct architectural proportions and structural integrity.
Condition Report
• Restoration Status: The table has undergone professional structural restoration and cleaning. The internal structural joinery pegs and dowels have been carefully reglued to ensure historical stability, load-bearing capacity, and longevity. No unnecessary alterations or structural modifications have been performed.
• Surface Condition: The solid walnut base has been cleaned to highlight the natural wood grain. The natural river slate top shows original, shallow vintage water glass ring marks and surface age character under close inspection. These markings have been preserved during cleaning to maintain the authentic patina and texture of the 1960s stone slab.
• Structural Integrity: The table is solid, stable, and completely sturdy. The interlocking three-piece peg-and-dowel base supports the weight of the slate top without wobbling or joint separation.
