Description
A unique mosaic of Georges Rouault's Profile of a Clown a post Fauve c. 1940 oil on board acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1951.
This brilliant interpretation turns up the emotional color of this well known painting from the dour blues and muted flesh tones of Georges Henri Rouault's 66 cm x 48 cm. portrait of a deeply depressed clown to one covered in cadmium reds and oranges, nile greens, chromium yellow, ivories of differing hues while closely mirroring the exaggerated heavy black line that is Rouault's trademark.
The dimensions of this mosaic 61 x 46 cm. (18 x 24") is very close to the original.
The framer's Providence Rhode Island label dated the framing with the absence of a zip code prior to 1963 and probably the mid to late 1950s.
I wonder if this might be the work of a MFA or RISD student or faculty member or artist who had permission to work in the gallery of the MFA Boston where the painting hangs.
The mosaic is in very good condition. -
