Description
A Regency brass inlaid rosewood adjustable center table, possibly for the display of a sculpture
English. Early Nineteenth Century.
Measurements
Width and Depth: 18 1/2" (47 cm) Square; Height when Closed: 33 3/4" (86 cm); Height Fully extended: approximately 38" (97 cm).
Research:
Of rosewood with brass inlay. The figured green marble top is edged with a reeded brass molding. The base consists of four shaped cross banded legs whose leading face is centered by brass line inlay. The four legs are united by a crossed stretcher, which is centered by a turned disc from which a threaded post of solid rosewood allows the top to be rotated to be raised or lowered. The whole is raised on original brass casters with brass socket cappings.
It is most likely that this table was a bespoke commission made for a collector or perhaps a dealer in sculptures. In addition to being beautifully drawn, this table is also superbly engineered so as to be stable when a heavy weight is placed upon it. It rotates smoothly and effortlessly and permits the viewer to observe the item displayed upon it from all angles.
