Coffee Table by Carlo Hauner for Forma, 1960s
-
Description
A confident example of modular Brazilian design, this coffee table by Carlo Hauner for Forma is a composition of clarity, balance and utility. Designed in the 1960s–70s, it reflects the modernist sensibility that defined Hauner’s approach, with a focus on form and versatile use.
Design
The square structure is divided into four functional quadrants. One section is inset with dark smoked and black glass, removable and framed flush with the wood structure. A second section is recessed and open, ideal for storing magazines or books. The third and fourth are covered with the same patterned hardwood seen throughout the exterior, showing a textural contrast to the clean, smooth glass panels. The piece rests on short, blocky legs, elevating the form subtly off the floor. Proportions are compact and low, with emphasis on geometry and material interplay. A thin black inlay runs around the base, adding a visual break and emphasizing the structure’s division.
The table captures Hauner’s broader design language—rooted in structure, yet open to subtle gesture. His collaboration with Forma created a number of iconic pieces that remain highly regarded within the international design field. This model shows his sensitivity to both spatial rhythm and user interaction.
Condition
The piece remains in very good condition. Surfaces show wear consistent with age, like scratches. The wood finish retains its warmth and the glass inlays are clean and intact. -
