Description
A rare and visually mesmerizing Op Art table created by an unidentified Californian glass studio in the 1980s. The circular top is composed of adjoining cast glass squares in alternating teal-green and gold tones, each finished with Dutch metal leaf that lends a subtle metallic shimmer. The artist introduced a one-eighth–inch variation between the height of each square, creating a dynamic optical swirl across the surface that shifts beautifully with light and perspective.
The five-sided cast bronze pedestal base features slide-in glass panels that repeat the checkerboard pattern, integrating the design from top to base. The table’s rhythmic geometry and interplay of translucent color, reflection, and texture exemplify the innovation of late 20th-century Californian studio design—when optical art and sculptural craftsmanship converged into collectible functional works.
Originally acquired for $10,000 in the 1980s, this exceptional piece balances structural solidity with visual illusion. Both furniture and artwork, it commands attention as a centerpiece in any refined interior or modern design collection.
Provenance: Private collection; purchased in California, c.1980s. -
