Description
Emanuele Zenere for Cattelan Italia
Valentino Dining Table
Italy, 1991
Designed by Emanuele Zenere for Cattelan Italia in 1991, the Valentino dining table reflects the architectural approach that characterized much Italian furniture design of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Zenere’s work frequently explored the relationship between substantial natural materials and visually lighter structural forms.
This example combines a cylindrical travertine base with an angular Canaletto walnut support beneath a 42 × 72 inch clear glass top. The composition balances mass and transparency in a restrained and functional way, while the asymmetrical base construction gives the table a distinctly architectural character. The proportions work particularly well for seating six comfortably while maintaining a relatively light visual footprint.
Produced by Cattelan Italia, the Valentino represents the company’s early emphasis on clean contemporary forms, refined materials, and precise Italian fabrication. Founded in northern Italy in 1979 by Giorgio and Silvia Cattelan, the firm became internationally recognized for furniture that blended modern architectural design with practical functionality. During this period, the company collaborated with a number of designers whose work bridged late modern and postmodern design sensibilities without excessive ornamentation.
The 42 × 72 inch glass top allows the travertine and walnut elements to remain fully visible from all angles while giving the table a more open visual presence than many heavier stone-based dining tables of the period.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition with light age-appropriate wear. Minor scratches and small surface marks consistent with careful use. The travertine, walnut, and glass all present well overall, and the table retains a strong original appearance. -
