A very distinct art deco burlwood coffee table with carved torsade or swirl legs. France, 1930s to 1940s.

A wonderful and rare table. The architectural silhouette carries a strong monumentality while remaining elegant and the more classically influenced base features two substantial torsade legs and delicate scroll feet. These stunning carved legs show a spiraling rhythm that lends movement and softness to the otherwise architectural form.

What makes this table particularly compelling is its tension between periods: the symmetry and classical grounding of the base recall neoclassical furniture traditions, while the voluptuous burl veneer and architectural oval top breath the decorative confidence of art deco. A rare fusion piece indeed.

This table comes in a good and original condition with wear due to age and use - most noticeable on the veneered top.
