English Seaweed Marquetry Bureau Table or Desk with Royal Provenance, circa 1735

Description
An exquisite circa 1735 English George II 'bureau table' or 'knee-hole desk' incorporating circa 1690 William and Mary 'arabesque' or 'seaweed' marquetry elements in the style of Gerrit Jensen, the ovolo moulded rectangular top inlaid with ebony scrolling foliage and flower heads in holly fields within oval-centered walnut strapwork above case with full-width top drawer and six side drawers with original brasses flanking central niche with door concealing a shelf divided interior all with corresponding marquetry decoration on bracket feet. An early written paper note glued to the interior bottom of the top drawer reads "This set of drawers formerly belonged to Queen Anne", which is compatible with the top, drawers, and niche door being reused from an earlier piece and with the fact of her death in 1714, twenty years earlier than the construction of the case.
