French Art Nouveau Gilt Console Table

French Art Nouveau giltwood console table circa 1900, a sculptural piece of furniture that expresses the artistry of the period when every aspect of interior design was an opportunity to minimize the geometry of the built environment softened with biomorphic references. This example has a shaped, white marble top that is slightly lobed at the front corners flowing in line with the gently arching splay of the two legs (the only legs meaning the piece needs to be secured to a wall for safety). An entanglement of floral and ribbon carvings decorate the bowed profile, which meet in the center of the apron as a pendant with a single flower. Note how the smooth luster of the gilded finish is truly dazzling to behold, like a piece of fine jewelry for the home. A stretcher joining the legs seems to make a connection to the poetry of Japanese floral arrangements,using the slight asymmetry for visual tension.
