Description
A very fine Empire center table crafted of beautifully patinated burl walnut veneers over secondary woods, the table retains its original black marble top. This was turned to create the dished top with an integral raised rim. Over each of the three columns is a honeysuckle gilded bronze mount, each pillar capped with an intricate stamped brass capital. The delightful warm cognac hue of the walnut is exquisite, this soft and translucent from years of rubbing and waxing. The structure of the apron is designed with curve-cut strips of pine that have been laminated to create the structure; a medial brace dovetails from one side to the other. The vibrant grain of the burl gives further evidence of a careful and thoughtful craftsman, a connoisseur with an appreciation for dramatic timber; the columns are wrapped in brilliant crisscrossing rays, the apron is book-matched to create great effect in the wood and the veneers are thoughtfully directed in the three panels of the stretcher as they converge in the center. This excellent center table is a visual treat and remains preserved in original condition throughout. Measurements: 38 1/4" diameter x 28 5/8" height Condition report: Extensive cracking around the apron where shrinkage has caused breakout in the underlying structure lamination, it remains incredibly strong and sturdy. Original castors on feet that have flattened out so that the table does not move using the castors. Original black marble top with some scuffing and wear from use.
