Description
GILT-BRONZE GUÉRIDON IN THE MANNER OF MAISON JANSEN
French, circa 1930s | unmarked
24" H x 27 3/4" diameter
A finely cast gilt-bronze guéridon with circular mirrored glass top within a pierced gallery of latticework design. The table is supported on four tapering fluted legs joined by rope-twist cross-stretchers secured at the center with knotted bosses. The legs terminate in reeded conical feet, while the central column is ebonized wood, contrasting with the gilt-bronze mountings.
Borrowing the angular Neoclassical forms of the Louis XVI era and reinterpreting them into modern materials was popular even in the 19th century, but it became practiced with great enthusiasm during the first half of the 20th century. Designers like Maison Jansen were incredibly effective at modernizing designs of antiquity for the tastes of his global clientele. This exquisite gueridon is one of the nicest examples of this that we can remember carrying at least in recent memory. Incredibly elegant.
Condition: Minor surface wear, trace oxidization and tarnish to gilt finish, particularly the feet. New mirrored top. Ready to place.
