Description
This stone top table exemplifies Organic Modern style with an emphasis on natural materials. The round stone top is carved from a unique material known as puddingstone, a conglomerate rock embedded with pebbles of various minerals. Named for its intriguing appearance resembling a pudding studded with raisins, puddingstone has historically been a favored material for Chinese painting tables and incense stands, appreciated for its dense texture, rich brown color and irregular composition.
Unearthed in Shandong province, the puddingstone top has been polished to a smooth surface and is elevated by a reclaimed wood base for use as a coffee table. The three wooden legs were crafted by a local Chicago artisan, each hand-turned of solid mulberry to a unique, spherical form. The rounded contours showcase the natural beauty of the wood, which boasts a subtle, golden color and striations of light and dark inherent to the grain.
Stone top can be reversed to become a shallow basin with a 1.5"H interior.
This sculptural table consists of four separate pieces. The stone slab is not affixed to the wooden legs and its heavy weight keeps it stable. The slab weighs approximately 230 lbs. -
