Description
A Genaro Alvarez glass tiled mosaic coffee table created in his Studio in Mexico City, Mexico circa 1955.
Genaro was a pupil of Diego Rivera.
This table's dramatic transition from its white and creme center to the darkening shades of umber with a random scattering of single cherry, gold mirrored and pink tiles.
The focus point of this table is the mirrored gold tiled outline of an atomic symbol.
The table rests on four turned mahogany legs with sculptural brass sabots and is bordered with a solid brass banded edge..
Stamped "by Genaro" and "HAND MADE IN MEXICO' on the underside as pictured.
The entry on Genaro Alvarez from the Mexican Design website Don Shoemaker.com.
"One artist that was recognized for his mosaic furniture creations is Genaro Alvarez.
The Genaro Alvarez Studio, (located in Mexico City) was known for its mosaic work in murals and floor designs as well as decorative furnishings such as lamps, trays and furniture using various types of natural rocks, semi-precious stones and glass mosaic, and his work is all handmade.
Genaro’s claim to fame was that he had developed a new concept on the manipulation of glass mosaic as an art expression.
In the late 1950’s Alvarez was awarded the commission for the mosaic floor for the Hallmark Gift & Card Shop in Kansas City, Missouri. He became very popular and well-known among American collectors."
The table is in very good vintage condition. -
